What To Know Before Buying A 10-Inch Subwoofer?

Like we said earlier, it takes a lot of knowledge to buy a subwoofer that’ll suit your needs. Below, you will find all the factors that you are to look at if you want to have a successful first purchase.

So without further ado, we’ll leave you to it.

1. Passive Or Active

Non-audiophiles are probably unfamiliar with the terms active and passive speakers, so we’re going to drop some technical knowledge here.

It’s a pretty significant difference, so please read carefully.

The active speaker includes an amplifier in its construction, while the passive doesn’t. This means that using a passive speaker requires an external amplifier, and for this reason, they’re usually a lot cheaper than the active variety.

But, this is just the tip of the iceberg.

Passive speakers usually have a single wire that takes care of the power and audio signal, while active ones have three.

Also, active speakers can be daisy-chained without any extra components. On the other hand, the more passive speakers you connect, the larger an amp you’ll need.

Both types have their pros and cons, so it’s up to you to decide what will suit you better.

2. Single Or Dual Voice Coils

Oh no, more technical jargon!

Don’t worry; this one is quite simple.

You’ll often find these features abbreviated as SVC or DVC. The purpose of voice coils in subwoofers is to bring the current from the amp.

Single voice refers to subwoofers with only one coil, and dual voice refers to models with another coil wrapped around the first one.

So what’s the difference in terms of performance?

To put it bluntly, DVC speakers perform better because they are more adjustable at managing the amp current.

3. Basket Type

The basket is the component that holds the other subwoofer elements, and it can be compared to a frame.

There are three different types of baskets, including stamped, cast, and hybrid.

Stamped baskets are the sturdiest, meaning that they are not easy to bend or break. Cast baskets are much more flexible and more lightweight than the stamped ones.

Ok, now here comes the important part.

When it comes to sound, stamped baskets are more resonant than cast models, so keep this in mind when purchasing. Also, cast baskets are better at heat management, so high temperatures will not mess with their performance.

The golden middle between these two types is the hybrid. It combines the best of both worlds, so that’s the one that you should be looking for.

4. Cone Material

As one could expect, the material that the cone is made from has an impact on how the subwoofer sounds, but also the overall quality.

So, what materials can you choose from, and what are their sound reproduction properties?

Read on to find out.

  • Polypropylene – very rigid and durable with solid performance.
  • Paper – Light, produces excellent sound, but vulnerable to temperature and humidity changes.
  • Kevlar – Stiff and lightweight, excellent response, but might it might ring.
  • Metal – Aluminum and magnesium are the most common. They both have very low distortion and poor damping (magnesium has less damping).

Unfortunately, there’s no perfect cone material. All of them have positives and negatives, so weigh them out and pick the one that you like the most.

5. Surrounding Material

Almost as important as the cone material is the material that surrounds it.

The purpose of the surrounding material is to keep the cone in place and protect it while not impeding its sound reproduction.

Here’s what you need to know.

  • Foam – this material is cheap, effective, and can last longer than 15 years.
  • Santoprene – the longest-lasting surrounding material that’s resistant to extreme temperatures.
  • Urethane – flexible and durable.

Same as with the cone, there is no optimal pick when it comes to the surrounding material. We advise you to check what others have to say about the subwoofer’s performance in this regard.

6. Power

When it comes to subwoofers, the more power, the better! But, when we speak of power, it’s also crucial to know how much of it the speaker can handle.

There are two things that you want to check out here, RMS and peak power rating.

Now, here is a well-kept secret.

Sometimes, the manufacturers exaggerate the peak power, so it’s better not to rely on this information. Instead, check the RMS rating as it should be a reliable indicator of the sub’s power.

If you already have an external amp, buy a speaker that can handle the amp’s power so that you get optimal performance.

7. Dimensions

Another key characteristic that you need to think about is the size of the woofer.

You need to realize that, even though all of the speakers in this category have 10-inch membranes, their overall sizes vary.

Why is this important?

This matters because folks with small cars who don’t have a lot of room will probably want the smallest model out there. Also, if you’re building custom woofer boxes, you need to know the dimensions so that your speakers can fit.

You’ll be surprised at how much 10-inch subwoofers differ in sizes, so make sure to pay close attention to this.

5 Best 10-inch Subwoofers In 2023: Detailed Reviews

After a long and gruesome search, we were able to pinpoint and review what we think are the best subwoofers currently on the market.

Be aware that the word “best” can have a subjective meaning in case of speakers, so don’t hold to our opinions too tightly.

Nevertheless, the subwoofers that you’re about to see are highly-praised, top-notch products that won’t leave you disappointed.

1. Pioneer TS – SW2502S4

Pioneer is a brand name that needs no introduction. Even if you’re not an audiophile, you’ve undoubtedly heard of this brand, so it’s no surprise that their speaker found their way to our list.

This is a relatively compact subwoofer having a depth of only 3 ⅛ inches, which makes small cars with cramped up interiors.

However, don’t be tricked into thinking that size compromises performance, as this speaker packs some serious bump.

Perhaps the most crucial part of the speaker is its power which does not disappoint. It has a peak performance at 1200 watts, which is quite a lot, but its RMS of 300 isn’t impressive, so be careful not to blow it out.

Now, the frequency range of this model is 20Hz to 12,5kHz, but it has some trouble reproducing the really low end of this spectrum. Another problem with this speaker is that sometimes it doesn’t feet the standard subwoofer boxes, so it may require a custom installation.

All in all, Pioneer TS – SW2502S4 is a 10-inch powerhouse that’ll suit any car, especially the smaller ones. On top of this, the subwoofer goes for an incredible price, so there’s no reason not to try it out.

Pros

  • Excellent performance
  • Affordable price
  • Fits smaller vehicles

Cons

  • Might not fit some 10-inch sub boxes
  • Not a very high RMS

2. JL Audio 10W6v3-D4

Here we have another top-notch subwoofer that’s sweeping the current market. Meet JL Audio 10W6v3-D4, one of the most praised 10-inch models online.

Is it worth it? Let’s find out.

The subwoofer has a dual coil that allows it to be connected to amps of different impedances.

JL Audio’s speaker also has an RMS of 600 watts, which means that it’ll be able to handle quite a bit of power and reproduce an immaculate bass.

As a matter of fact, this model is famous for being distortion-less; that’s how good it is.

However, to be able to utilize the speaker’s full capacity, you will need a very powerful amp, which means spending more money.

In regards to mounting, this speaker is relatively long and requires a mounting depth of 6.89”, which may be challenging to do in smaller vehicles.

There have been no complaints about the installation of the subwoofer, so we assume that this should go smoothly.

The material of the cone is mineral-filled polypropylene. Praised for its durability, this material only makes the speaker more desirable and adds to its quality.

JL Audio 10W6v3-D4 has a fantastic sound and will satisfy anyone who loves a great bass, but it also costs a lot.

Pros

  • Impeccable sound quality
  • High power handling
  • Made from high-quality materials

Cons

  • Requires a big amp to be used at full capacity

3. Rockford Fosgate R2D4-10

Rockford is the creator of many speakers that achieved great popularity in recent years. One of those speakers is the Fosgate R2D4-10 subwoofer, and now we’re going to give it a close inspection.

The 10-inch subwoofer is available in both single and dual coil designs, the former being labeled as 2-Ohm and the latter as a 4-Ohm speaker.

Speaking of technical characteristics, this model’s RMS is 250 watts, which isn’t a lot, so you won’t need a powerful amp to crank it.

Like many other subwoofers, this one too employs polypropylene as its cone’s material. The cone is able to push out a significant amount of air and produce an incredible sounding bass.

Unfortunately, the woofer doesn’t pack a lot of power (500W MAX), so it might not be the right choice for loud music lovers.

The speaker’s dimensions include a 13” overall diameter and a depth of 7”, so it is far from being the smallest model out there.

Besides its high-quality sound, another great thing about Fosgate R2D4-10 is the price, which is more than acceptable. This cost will allow you to install several subwoofers in your car without breaking the bank.

To sum up, this is a reliable car speaker that isn’t the most powerful, but it generates an excellent audio quality for a low price.

Pros

  • Great sound reproduction
  • Very affordable
  • Solid construction

Cons

  • Slightly bulky
  • A relatively low RMS

4. Planet Audio AC 10D

Looking for subwoofers that’ll blow out the windows on your car?

Planet Audio’s AC 10D should do the trick! Read and see if they’re right for you.

As you can imagine from our theatrical description above, this subwoofer packs some serious power – 1500 Watts MAX.

This is more than enough, regardless of how big your car is or how loud you like to listen to music. In general, it sounds really well until you crank it up to its limits, which is where you can expect some distortion.

With great power comes great power handling, and AC 10D has an RMS of 900W. However, we raised an eyebrow over this claim, and we believe that it’s realistically around 600W, which is still a lot.

This model, too, has a polypropylene cone surrounded by foam, and both materials are highly praised. Still, the speaker feels kind of cheap and not well constructed, but you can expect more for such a low price.

The subwoofer’s overall diameter is around 11” and with a depth of only 5”, it can be installed in small cars without any problems.

Pros

  • High RMS level
  • Very powerful
  • Great price
  • Clear sound

Cons

  • Tends to heat up
  • Possible distortion if played very loudly

5. Rockford Fosgate P300-10 Punch

Here’s another subwoofer from Rockford, and this is the only active model on the list. Fosgate P300-10 is an all-in-one woofer that packs a punch, so let’s dissect it.

The speaker requires an AC power supply and speaker connectors to work, so you can connect it to any stock stereo you have lying around. The 300-watt amp isn’t the most powerful, but it’s still able to create a loud and clear bass.

P300’s frequency response is 50Hz-200Hz, which means that it cannot reproduce very low frequencies like some other models. With that being said, this might not be a perfect choice for heavy bass enthusiasts.

The speaker has a stand-alone design, which is excellent if you want to use it in your home, but not so good for cars. The reason we say this is that you’ll need to find a way to secure it and prevent it from moving while you drive.

The price of the woofer is another setback, as it costs several times more than some other models on this list. To be fair, this is an active speaker, and they are usually more expensive than passive ones.

Pros

  • Produces a clean bass
  • Easy to hook up
  • 1-year warranty

Cons

  • Self-standing, not ideal for cars
  • Expensive
  • Not very powerful

Conclusion

As you could read in the article, there is a lot of variation within the 10-inch subwoofer category, so one has to do a lot of thinking when trying to pick the best model.

Well, that’s just what we did, and we chose Pioneer TS – SW2502S4 to be the winner.

We figured that it’s hard to go wrong with this subwoofer because it has it all – performance, power, and small size. To make things even sweeter, this model goes for a pretty low price.

Of course, you don’t have to like the same thing as us, so feel free to buy any other subwoofer from the list, if you like happen to it more.
