There is an old saying that tells us that “clothes make a man.” Although there is a lot of truth here, I’d much rather replace the term clothes with grooming.

You see, clothes can be bought. Grooming requires a constant effort to be the best men you can possibly be.

The large chunk of this effort can be contributed to hair care. If you don’t make sure your hair looks soft, shiny and cared for, no suit in the world will make you appear manly.

Let us then check some of the most popular hair care products currently in the market and see if we can find the best conditioner for men the money can buy.

How To Choose The Best Conditioned For Your Hair Type

But, before we proceed to the very list of products, let’s get some things straight.

First, what is the hair conditioner?

Well, you know when you wash your hair how it feels all tangled, thorny and rough. The conditioner is the product that makes sure you don’t have such problems. Use it with your shampoo of choice and your hair will be smooth, glossy and silky.

How to choose the best conditioner?

This is a much harder question to answer. The answer largely boils down to the type of the conditioner, the type of your hair, and how successfully you are going to find the middle ground between the two. So, let’s break them down one by one.

1. The Different Hair Types

First, let us lay some groundwork and take a look at the hair types we can all fit. Well, at least to a degree.

  • Wavy hair – A pretty awesome hair type, but a real styling nightmare – the longer it grows, the waves become more noticeable and grooming more challenging. Usually, curly hair has a nasty tendency of becoming frizzy and dry, so you should look for something to soften it up.
  • Straight hair – A very common hair type that offers a lot of different styling options. In most of the cases, it is often very soft and lacks volume, so you should look for something to provide it with more support. Still, this classification is very broad.
  • Dry/frizzy hair – This is yet another hair type that presents a lot of grooming challenges. The best thing you can do if you are graced with dry or frizzy hair is to do your best to make it softer.
  • Fine hair – As the name suggests, this hair type is very delicate. Look for a way to boost its volume.
  • Thin hair – Thin hair shares a lot of the problems with fine hair, but they are not quite the same. In this case, you should aim to make the hair strands look thicker. Also, look for the products that were designed to prevent hair loss.
  • Sensitive hair – Sensitive hair can belong to any of the previously mentioned hair types. The lowest common denominator for this specific variety is that it gets very easily damaged. Therefore, you should look for completely sulfate-free products.
  • Oily hair – Much like the previous type, oily hair can be thin, curly or straight. What sets it apart is that… Well, it’s oily. In this case, you should look for the formula that will balance the oil content in your skin.

We could go on with this for eternity, but there is really no need. Your hair type either belongs to some of the groups we covered or presents a combination of several different types. Let us then proceed to…

2. The Different Types Of Conditioners

As I already briefly mentioned, different conditioners serve different purposes. Here are the most common types:

  • Hydrating – This type of conditioner is used for adding moisture, smoothness and shine to the hair. It is mostly used by men with coarse or curly hair.
  • Volumizing – If your hair is fine or limp, this is the type for you. You can also use it if your hair simply needs a small lift to look good.
  • Balancing – A perfect match for people who don’t need too much moisturizing or drying but a bit of both.
  • Strengthening – This formula is designed to reinforce highlighted, weak, damaged and brittle hair.
  • Smoothing – This type adds an extra dose of moisture to your hair and helps it straighten and become smoother.
  • Conditioners for curly hair – Yeah, this hair type is so wonderfully demanding it has its own conditioner type. In the end, you end up with softer hair strands and less effort to reduce frizz.

3. Grooming Habits

Now, the previous two mentions are, by far, the two most important considerations you will need to make when choosing the hair conditioner. They are not, however, the only ones.

Your grooming habits play a significant role in this decision. For instance, if you don’t consider styling that important (not recommended), you can invest in smaller high-quality packages that will put on an excellent performance when they are called for.

As for the men who use conditioner more regularly, the high standards remain. But, you should probably buy not-perishable products that are sold in bulks.

4. Price Of The Product

Last but not least, let’s quickly talk about price. The well-styled hair is incredible. But, maintaining difficult hair type can prove to be very unbearable money-wise.

So, feel free to give yourself some slack, put the fancy buzzwords aside and simply find something that will put on the best possible performance with the least money invested. You can cover the so-called “blind-spots” with other hair products.

5 Best Hair Conditioners For Men In 2022: Detailed Reviews

1. Jack Black – Nourishing Hair and Scalp Conditioner

Jack Black is a brand that is no stranger to any man that puts a lot of care into grooming. Still, I somehow managed to be very pleasantly surprised by this neat package.

First of all, I really, really liked is the product’s formula. The key ingredients are entirely nature-based and include the likes of tea tree leaf oil, basil, silk protein, Vitamin B5, and green tea extract. So, you are not only getting smooth hair, but you also get a healthy dose of nourishment as well.

A genuine recommendation for all of you with fine hair or some minor skin condition.

Second, the manufacturer claims that the product is made for every hair type, which is a buzz word that essentially means it doesn’t stray too far in any direction.

Still, you will get the best results if you have curly, dry or frizzy hair that requires a bit of moisturizing. Once the treatment is done, the strands will feel nourished, your hair will become very smooth and silky, but it won’t lose any of the support.

It’s because of this balanced formula and versatile benefits the conditioner can be used even by people whose hair is well-moisturized.

The only thing that I wasn’t really excited about is the product’s smell. In spite of all the beneficial ingredients, the conditioner features no fragrances. What you are left is the formula that features very strong… Well, let’s call it conditioner odour.

It’s not something that can’t be solved with a good shampoo, but it’s still something I would like to point out.

  • Excellent balanced performance
  • The conditioner moisturizes the hair without making it oily
  • Nourishing properties are an excellent match for damaged hair
  • The product makes an easy job of dry and curly hair
  • Good hair support

  • A bit pricy
  • Pretty strong smell

2. American Crew Daily Conditioner for Men

Since I cited out the odour as the main issue I had with the previous product you can imagine just how enthusiastic I was when I found out this package is infused with a healthy dose of thyme, rosemary, peppermint oil, and even Saponaria bark extract.

Yeah, it’s a combination that produces something I could best describe as a scented haven. What’s even better is that this pleasant scent remains long after you have rinsed the conditioner out of your hair.

But, the scent is not amongst the most critical buying considerations (so much so I decided to remove it off my list altogether).

What does this product bring to the table grooming-wise?

Well, the first thing I would like to point out is the excellent care for thin hair. A lot of men start losing hair as soon as they enter the 30s. The beneficial formula that can be found in this bottle makes sure this process will be slowed down as much as possible.

Speaking of the bottle, the conditioner is packed in the very generous and affordable 15.2 Oz package that makes sure you will be able to use the conditioner on a daily basis.

Finally, I should mention that this product aims at a bit more niche audience than the previous one. In a nutshell, it produces the best results if your hair is overly oily and needs a bit of drying. You will be able to get away even if you need a bit of smoothing, though.

Also, the product is not the most consistent on the market. Don’t fall into the trap of last-minute styling with this one.

  • Great value for the money
  • Incredible scent
  • Excellent match for thinning hair
  • Good performance with oily hair

  • A bit too narrow appeal
  • Inconsistent performance

3. ArtNaturals Organic Moroccan Argan Oil Shampoo and Conditioner Set

So, you thought that American Crew’s conditioner was economical and affordable? Well, think twice because this product has “value for money” written all over its huge package.

So yeah, as you can see from the title, this is one of those “two in one” packages that contain both shampoo and conditioners. The benefits of such setups go way beyond the monetary considerations.

In packages like this, the products are designed to play to each other strengths and counterbalance weaknesses, and ArtNaturals’ bundle is no exception. So, there is one thing less to worry about you.

Another good news is that the formula of both these products is based on Argan oil which does an excellent job providing care to all types of damaged hair. The rest of the ingredients is not that bad either.

For instance, the hydrating minerals you can find in the oil are an excellent way to refresh the hair strands and make your hair feeling soft and shiny. So, we are obviously talking about a product that needs a bit of nourishment.

With the things as they are, I find very odd to see just how misjudged the formula is. You see, although you get excellent hair care, the conditioner will prove to be living hell for people with sensitive skin. Yeah, I’m talking about the avalanche of dandruff.

What’s even more intriguing is that the previous formulas of this very same product handled this issue quite gracefully. So, as soon as the manufacturer notices the error of its ways (the negative feedback is quite loud) and dials back the formula, you’ll have a genuinely standout package.

  • Good value for the money
  • The shampoo and conditioner make a very good couple
  • Excellent hair care
  • A lot of beneficial ingredients

  • Unfortunately, the formula is all over the place
  • Not for people with sensitive skin

4. Woody’s Daily Conditioner for Men

Woody’s Daily Conditioner doesn’t try to win over the audience with flashy buzzwords and false promises. Instead, the manufacturer took the easier route and packed their product in a big, fat, white bottle you can’t fail to notice on the shelf.

An excellent marketing ploy if you ask me.

So, lets’ move one thing off the table – if you don’t like to resupply your hair care stocks every week, this 33.8 Oz package will solve you at least one big problem. Incredibly, the affordable price comes right behind to save you some money along the way.

But, this conditioner is not all about affordability. If you have a curly, hair, you will notice you are dealing with far fewer knots from the first use. So, the formula IS working.

Also, the smell is simply exceptional. Honestly, I was pleasantly surprised to find such a pleasant fragrance in such an affordable package.

Finally, I have to mention that the product is very streamlined and easy to use. Just apply it on the wet hair after shampooing, leave it be half a minute and rinse out.

On the downside, that’s pretty much it. The conditioner works perfectly fine if you have dry or curly hair, and smells great but offers really nothing beyond this most basic requirement.

But, if you are buying a conditioner with one specific purpose, you’ll find a lot to enjoy.

  • Very substantial package
  • A good match for a dry curly hair
  • Affordable product
  • The scent is simply amazing

  • The most basic conditioner you’ll ever see in your life

5. Krieger + Söhne Men’s Hair Conditioner

K+S is a brand that carries a lot of weight in the grooming industry. You can imagine then just how surprised I was to see one of their products so low on my list.

The thing is this product is not that bad – not by a stretch. It just has a problem finding its selling point, so I hadn’t had any reason to put it in front of any of the previously covered conditioners.

So, what do we have here?

Well, the pretty large bottle of 16 Oz that looks like it has a lot of mileage in itself. Then, there is the vitamin-based formula enriched with a heavy dose of peppermint oil that grants one incredibly pleasant smell. And you also get excellent healing properties that should work for anyone with damaged hair.

Otherwise, this conditioner is mostly preoccupied with smoothening and hydration. People with oily hair won’t get as much enjoyment as the fizzy folk.

What’s wrong?

In short, the conditioning properties are not that great. You will see the results but only in hints. And then there is the fact that the product offers nothing extraordinary but costs more than most of its direct competitors.

  • A balanced and nourishing formula
  • Substantial package
  • Pleasant scent
  • Ease of application

  • Weak conditioning
  • The product is somewhat pricey

The Winner Of The Roundup

Finally, the time has come to round up our contenders and see which one of them takes the title of best conditioner for men. And what to say, selecting the winner was near impossible.

The combination of different hair types and appropriate conditioners is endless. Keeping that in mind, and taking into consideration just how effortlessly versatile Jack Black – Nourishing Hair and Scalp Conditioner ended up being a have to give it the number one spot.
